AI Orchestration

AI Orchestration for Coordinated Models, Data and Business Workflows

AI orchestration connects the parts that make AI useful in a company: several models, company knowledge, tools, workflows and the rules that govern them. This guide explains what an orchestration layer does, which problems it solves and how it is typically deployed in the cloud.

What is AI orchestration?

AI orchestration is the coordinated management of AI components within business processes. It decides which model handles a request, which data it may use, which tools it may call, how results are checked and what is recorded.

The term covers more than agent coordination. Even a simple assistant involves orchestration: retrieving the right documents, choosing a model, applying data protection rules and logging the interaction.

Problems an orchestration layer solves

Model sprawl

Different teams use different models with different contracts and rules.

Fragmented data access

Each use case builds its own connections to documents and databases.

Inconsistent controls

Permissions, approvals and logging differ per tool.

Unclear costs

Usage is spread across accounts and cannot be attributed.

Vendor lock-in

Changing a model requires rebuilding applications.

Key functions

  • Model routing by task, quality, cost and data class
  • Retrieval of permitted company knowledge
  • Tool and API integration
  • Workflow and agent coordination
  • Policies, approvals and audit logging
  • Evaluation, monitoring and cost reporting

Retrieval and grounding

Many business answers must rely on company documents rather than model knowledge. Orchestration retrieves relevant passages within the user's permissions, passes them to the model and shows sources with the answer. Quality depends on document preparation, search configuration and regular evaluation.

Cloud-native orchestration

Cloud deployment offers elastic scaling, managed model endpoints and regional hosting. Design choices include where vector indexes live, which models may receive confidential data, and how traces are retained. A hybrid setup - cloud orchestration with sensitive processing in a private environment - is common.

Getting started

  1. Inventory models, use cases and data sources
  2. Define data classes and model policies
  3. Introduce central model access and logging
  4. Connect key knowledge sources with permission-aware retrieval
  5. Move first use cases onto the layer and measure

Who works with an orchestration layer?

Business teams

Describe use cases, provide examples and own the quality of results in their processes.

IT and platform teams

Operate the layer, connect systems, manage identities and keep costs and performance under control.

Security and data protection

Define data classes, approve model policies and review logs and incidents.

Management

Sets priorities and risk appetite and decides which processes may be automated to which degree.

Example: one request through the orchestration layer

An employee asks an internal assistant which warranty terms apply to a specific customer contract. The orchestration layer verifies the employee's identity, retrieves the contract and the warranty policy from the document system within the employee's permissions, routes the question to a model approved for confidential documents, returns an answer with references to the exact clauses and stores the interaction in the audit log. If the employee asks the assistant to send the answer to the customer, the layer requires an approval step first.

UberGPT as an AI Orchestration Layer

UberGPT is developing an AI Orchestration Layer for coordinating AI agents, models, company data and applications. It is in early market introduction, so the available functions and integrations should be confirmed for each project.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AI orchestration and MLOps?

MLOps manages the lifecycle of trained models. AI orchestration coordinates how models, data, tools and workflows are used together in business processes.

Do we need AI orchestration for one chatbot?

A single use case can work without a dedicated layer, but the functions still exist inside the application. A shared layer pays off once several use cases share data and rules.

Can orchestration reduce AI costs?

Yes, mainly through model routing, caching and visibility of usage per team and use case.

Is AI orchestration only for agents?

No. It applies to assistants, document processing and automations as well as to multi-agent systems.
